TradingView vs NinjaTrader for Futures: Charting, Execution and What Each Costs
One is a browser tab that charts everything and executes through a broker panel; the other is a Windows program that executes everything and charts what you feed it. Where each wins on bars, orders, replay, add-ons and data, what the monthly bill is, and why many NQ traders run both.
"TradingView vs NinjaTrader" is usually asked by someone who has charts in one and an account in the other and wants to stop switching windows. The short answer is that they are not the same kind of product. TradingView is a charting service that runs in a browser and sends orders through a broker panel. NinjaTrader 8 is a Windows execution platform that also charts, built around the order ticket. Which one carries your futures trading depends on which of those two things you do more of, and the NinjaTrader chart setup pillar covers the NT8 half from zero.
What they are
TradingView runs anywhere with a browser (plus desktop and mobile apps), keeps your layouts in the cloud and charts stocks, crypto, forex and futures from one search box. Its scripting language is Pine, and its public library holds more scripts than anyone will ever read. Orders go out through whichever broker you connect in the trading panel; for futures that includes Tradovate, which matters to prop traders because a Lucid or Apex account routed through Tradovate can be traded from a TradingView chart, and Lucid lists TradingView among its supported platforms. Topstep is the exception: its own TopstepX platform does not connect to TradingView at all.
NinjaTrader 8 is a desktop program for Windows. It charts, but its center is execution: the ATM strategy, Chart Trader, the SuperDOM, OCO brackets and a scripting layer in C# (NinjaScript) that can automate all of it. It connects to Tradovate, Rithmic and a list of brokers, and NinjaTrader is also a brokerage itself. Prop firms hand out NT8 credentials because the platform is free when you trade through a connection they support.
Feature by feature
| TradingView | NinjaTrader 8 | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Browser, Windows/Mac/Linux desktop app, iOS, Android | Windows desktop; web and mobile exist with a reduced feature set |
| Bar types | Time bars on every plan; custom range bars from Essential, intraday Renko, Kagi and Point & Figure from Plus, second-based bars from Premium, tick-based bars only on Ultimate | Minute, tick, range, volume, Renko and more on every license, including free |
| Order handling | Market, limit, stop and bracket orders through the broker panel; behavior depends on the broker | Native: ATM templates with auto breakeven and auto trail, OCO, Chart Trader, SuperDOM, hotkeys |
| Automation | Pine alerts fired to a webhook; execution needs a bridge | NinjaScript strategies run inside the platform against the live connection |
| Replay | Bar Replay on every plan for daily bars and up; intraday replay from Essential (180 days of minute data) to full history on Premium | Market Replay with tick data, free, on any connection |
| Volume profile | Built-in session, visible-range and fixed-range profiles from the Essential plan; community profile scripts on the free plan | Part of Order Flow+: included on every plan once a NinjaTrader brokerage account is funded, $59 a month as a standalone add-on without one, and bundled with some prop-firm logins, Lucid's Tradovate login among them |
| Real-time CME data | Not included on any plan; $7 a month for non-professionals, otherwise delayed 10 minutes | Comes with the brokerage or prop connection; separate exchange fees if you trade your own account |
| Community add-ons | 100,000+ community indicators and strategies in Pine, most free | NinjaScript ecosystem, mix of free and paid, imported as zips |
| Layouts | Cloud-saved, open the same chart on any device | Workspaces and templates stored on the PC |
Read the table with one thing in mind: every row where NinjaTrader wins is about execution or about tick data, and every row where TradingView wins is about reach and convenience. That split is the whole comparison.
What each costs
TradingView plans are billed monthly or annually and the tiers differ mostly in charts per tab, indicators per chart and alerts. At the time of writing, annual billing works out to $12.95 a month for Essential, $29.95 for Plus and $59.95 for Premium; paying month to month is $14.95, $34.95 and $69.95. None of them includes live CME quotes: the CME bundle (CME, CBOT, COMEX, NYMEX, all the E-minis and micros) is a separate $7 a month for non-professional users, and without it NQ is ten minutes behind.
NinjaTrader is priced through commissions rather than a subscription. The platform itself is free to download, chart on and trade in simulation without a time limit. Trading live through NinjaTrader's own brokerage comes in three plans at the time of writing: Free ($0 a month, $0.39 per micro and $1.29 per standard contract per side), Monthly ($99 a month, $0.29 and $0.99) and Lifetime ($1,499 once, $0.09 and $0.59), and all three include Order Flow+ and Level I CME data as long as the account is funded; without a funded account Order Flow+ is a standalone add-on at $59 a month. On a prop account none of that applies: the connection runs through Tradovate or Rithmic, the firm's commission schedule replaces NinjaTrader's, and the platform costs nothing.
| Setup | Monthly cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| TradingView Plus (annual) + CME data | $36.95 | Live NQ charts anywhere, profiles, alerts; execution through the Tradovate panel |
| NinjaTrader 8 on a prop account | $0 | Full execution stack, tick charts, replay; volume profile only if the firm's login includes Order Flow+ |
| Both: TradingView Essential + CME, NT8 on the prop account | $19.95 | Profiles and alerts in the browser, execution and tick charts in NT8 |
| NT8 on a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account (Free plan) | $0, commissions only | Order Flow+ and Level I CME data included, your own capital; Lifetime ($1,499 once) buys the same with the lowest commissions |
The third row is the one most prop traders land on, and the reason is the volume profile row in the feature table. Profiles come with the cheapest paid TradingView plan, while in NinjaTrader they come with Order Flow+, which a funded brokerage account includes and a prop login may not; that is the whole point of the free volume profile post.
Three ways traders combine them
TradingView only. Chart, mark and execute in one browser tab through the Tradovate panel. Cheapest to learn, works on a Mac, and the layouts follow you. The cost is the order ticket: no ATM templates, so breakeven and trail moves are manual or broker-dependent, and no tick-count bars for the execution chart below the $199.95 Ultimate plan.
NinjaTrader only. Everything on one Windows machine, no subscription, the strongest order handling in retail futures and Market Replay for practice. The cost is that key levels from a profile come either from Order Flow+, if your prop login includes it (a funded NinjaTrader brokerage account always does), or from reading them off a daily chart by hand, and the charts stay on that PC.
Both. TradingView for preparation and NinjaTrader for the session: draw the profile and mark POC, VAH and VAL in the browser, copy the three prices onto the NT8 chart, then trade from NT8 with the ATM doing the exits. Two windows, two logins, and each tool doing the part it is built for.
I run the second setup. NinjaTrader 8 on the prop connection for everything: range bars for execution, tick bars for context, the morning profile from Order Flow+, which Lucid's Tradovate login includes, and an ATM I do not have to think about once the entry fills. I have no TradingView subscription and have not missed one, because everything TradingView does better, reach, cloud layouts and charting on any device, is convenience away from the desk, and the trading happens at the desk. If my prop login did not include Order Flow+, the third setup is what I would run.
